Description

The Green Pin® Open Spelter Socket BN G-6422 is a wire rope termination fitting used to create a permanent, high-strength end connection on steel wire rope through the traditional spelter (resin or metal poured) socketing method. The open design provides a bolt-type (BN) pin connection, allowing the terminated wire rope to connect directly to shackles, padeyes, or other rigging hardware at the open jaw of the socket.

Type: Open spelter socket with bolt-type (BN) pin, designed for permanent wire rope termination via resin or white-metal socketing.

Function: Creates a full-strength, permanent termination at the end of a steel wire rope, capable of developing the full breaking strength of the rope itself when correctly socketed — a key advantage over mechanical clip-based terminations, which typically achieve only a percentage of the rope’s rated strength.

Construction: Forged or cast alloy steel body, engineered to accept a poured resin or white-metal socketing compound that locks the splayed wire rope strands permanently in place inside the socket basket.

Standard: Manufactured in line with recognised wire rope termination standards, with open spelter sockets widely used across crane, mining, marine, and oil & gas applications where a permanent, full-strength termination is required.

Common applications: Crane hoist rope terminations, mooring and towing wire rope end fittings, mining shaft and haulage rope terminations, and any application where a wire rope needs a permanent, certified end connection rather than a field-adjustable termination.

Why open spelter sockets are used: Unlike wire rope clips or compression fittings, a correctly socketed spelter termination develops close to 100% of the wire rope’s minimum breaking load, making it the preferred termination method for critical lifting and hoisting applications where maximum rope strength retention matters most.

Socketing process: Wire rope ends are splayed, cleaned, and inserted into the socket basket, then permanently locked in place using a poured resin compound (or traditionally, molten zinc or white metal), which should only be carried out by trained, competent personnel following the socket and rope manufacturer’s procedures.

Inspection requirements: Regularly inspect the socket body for cracking, deformation, or corrosion, and check the pin connection for wear — any socket showing visible damage or where the rope shows movement within the socket basket should be taken out of service.

Brand: Manufactured under the Green Pin® brand, supplying certified wire rope termination hardware to the crane, marine, and industrial lifting sectors.
